HOUSTON QUILT FESTIVAL

Tonight is preview night for the HQF. I am thrilled to see all of the quilts and also some of the winning quilts with their beautiful ribbons. I will take my camera and shoot as many as I can. I promised a few people that I would take photos of their quilts, the ones who could not travel to Houston this year. Yesterday I met my cyber friend, Marie J. It was great to see each other face to face after corresponding for almost two years!! Her room mate and friend, Sarah S. came with us as I gave them a tour of Houston. We visited TEXAS ART SUPPLY, CHICOS, HOBBY LOBBY, THE WATER WALL, YARNS 4 EWE and lunch at HICKORY HOLLOW BBQ.

BRAVING THE ELEMENTS

The Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. That was the theme for the 2008 Journal Quilts challenge. As with every exhibit, there are always great pieces that aren't shown. Some may not have intrigued the jurors, others may not have been finished in time. The QuiltArt community, from which all Journal Quilts come, wanted to see those that won't be hung at Festival this year.
I am so excited to be part of this online exhibit!!! Please follow the link below and check out the show. (don't forget to look for my quilt) http://www.quiltart.com/elements/

MOO CARDS

Some people on my Quiltart list were talking about MOO CARDS. I had to check it out for myself. These little cards come from England and are used as business cards to show how just being a little different can help you. I had some made for my daughter's art work. She wants to sell Giclee prints of her pastel drawings to veterinarian offices and doctors. What a great way to show people your art and give them your information so they can call you! The backside of these cards has her info on them. I am going to order some for myself now! http://www.moo.com/products/minicards.php?gcid=S31011x124-minicards&keyword=moo%20cards

JEWISH KINSHIP

Here is the quilt I have been working on for the EPU II Challenge. My artist statement explains why I made this particular quilt. I can't believe I made the deadline for today!!!
Technique: photo-transfer, appliqué, machine pieced, machine quilted, hand beaded and embellished. This quilt expresses for me the meaning of E Pluribus Unum. I was a young Jewish girl when I read the remarkable book, “The Diary of Anne Frank”. I was also exposed to a film on the horrors of the Holocaust on my confirmation retreat in 10th grade. But as an adult I had the pleasure of meeting Ruth, a Holocaust survivor. She was a close family friend of my husband’s family. After hearing her story I immediately thought of Ruth when this project was introduced.

SIXTY FIVE YEARS AGO

ALMOST SIXTY FIVE YEARS AGO MY PARENTS MET EACH OTHER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS IN AUSTIN. THESE PICTURES WERE TAKEN IN FRONT OF THE FOUNTAIN ON CAMPUS. UNFORTUNATELY THE WAR ENTERED THEIR LIVES AND MY FATHER DROPPED OUT OF COLLEGE AND WAS SHIPPED OVERSEAS.

HOOVER DAM

I took these photos as we were flying over the Grand Canyon area on the way to Vegas. If you look carefully you can see that the water level is down at Hoover Dam. This dam, located 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, is named after Herbert Hoover, who played an instrumental role in its construction, first as the Secretary of Commerce and then later as the President of the United States. Construction began in 1931 and was completed in 1935, more than two years ahead of schedule. I actually went there when I was five years old on a family trip to Disney Land. I wasn't old enough to go on the tour of the dam where they actually take you down in there!

TUESDAY AFTERNOON

How many of you remember The Moody Blues? I used to listen to them all the time. That is what reminded me of the song, "TUESDAY AFTERNOON". I love listening to music while I work on my art. Today I am trying to finish the quilting on my EPU ll Challenge. I will post pictures of it soon.

SHOW AND TELL SUNDAY

While surfing some blog sites this morning I noticed a new challenge, SHOW AND TELL SUNDAY. I thought that was a great idea! Took me back to my kindergarten days when we would bring in something to share with the class. I decided to share some of my mosaic art with you today. It is whimsical and fun so enjoy! They are each 12x12 pieces made to hang on the wall or rest on a stand.
